The Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre in Chennai, India, is led by our Senior Fellow Dr. R Padmavati and is hosted at the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF). SCARF was established in 1984 by Dr. Sarada Menon to improve care and rehabilitation for individuals with mental illness, to pioneer research, training, and policy changes, and to improve awareness about mental illness. SCARF is recognised as the only World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Mental Health Research and Training in India.
The Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre in Lahore operates under the Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre (PPRC) at Fountain House and is led by our Senior Fellow, Prof. Dr. Afzal Javed. The Centre aims to strengthen Pakistan’s role in geopsychiatry and psychiatry more generally by addressing regional the mental health challenges linked to climate change, conflict, poverty, and social stigma. To that end, relevant initiatives have included webinars on climate change and mental health, research publications on geopolitical mental health determinants, educational modules in collaboration with Khyber University, and active participation in international congresses. Fountain House also supports psychosocial rehabilitation, poverty alleviation through microfinance, and targeted programs for marginalized groups such as homeless females and transgender communities.
