Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre, Chennai, India

The Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre in Chennai, India, is led by our Senior Fellow Dr. R Padmavati and is hosted at the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF). SCARF was established in 1984 by Dr. Sarada Menon to improve care and rehabilitation for individuals with mental illness, to pioneer research, training, and policy changes, and to improve awareness about mental illness. SCARF is recognised as the only World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Mental Health Research and Training in India.

Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre, Lahore, Pakistan

The Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre in Lahore operates under the Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre (PPRC) at Fountain House and is led by our Senior Fellow, Prof. Dr. Afzal Javed. The Centre aims to strengthen Pakistan’s role in geopsychiatry and psychiatry more generally by addressing regional the mental health challenges linked to climate change, conflict, poverty, and social stigma. To that end, relevant initiatives have included webinars on climate change and mental health, research publications on geopolitical mental health determinants, educational modules in collaboration with Khyber University, and active participation in international congresses. Fountain House also supports psychosocial rehabilitation, poverty alleviation through microfinance, and targeted programs for marginalized groups such as homeless females and transgender communities.

CareIf (Institute Partner), London, United Kingdom

Careif is a an international mental health charity based in London, UK and is a Partner organisation of the Institute. CareIf works towards increasing awareness of mental health conditions and the mental health of everyone across all countries and cultures. They aim to advance and share knowledge of good mental health practice whilst respecting and engaging with local and international cultures and traditions.

The Carribean

Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre, Barbados, West Indies

The Caribbean Center for Geopsychiatry (CCG) collaborates in research, teaching, clinical service, and policy development promoting mental health and wellbeing in the Caribbean. The CCG engages transdisciplinary work grounded in the complex geopolitical, economic, and culturalities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), especially in the areas of mental health challenges emanating from disasters, the intersection of national development and public mental health, voluntary and forced migration, bioethics in resource-limited settings, and culturally responsive assessment and intervention. The references include some representative publications. The CCG is co-chaired by Dr. Myrna Lashley (McGill University) and Dr. Mike Campbell (The University of the West Indies).

Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre, Brasilia, Brazil

The Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre in Brasília operates in partnership with the University of Brasília (UnB), coordinated by our Senior Fellow, Prof. Dr. Helena Moura, at the School of Medicine. The centre aims to expand Brazil’s voice in global Geopsychiatry, highlighting the country’s diverse geopolitical challenges to mental health. Its initiatives include public engagement through opinion pieces in major newspapers such as Correio Braziliense, the organization of a 2023 symposium featuring our Founding Patron, Dr. Albert Persaud, and the integration of Geopsychiatry into medical education and psychiatric training. The Brasilia Centre also promotes research on geopolitical determinants of mental health, including gender-based violence, continuous trauma, and climate change.

Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre, Asunción, Paraguay

The Geopsychiatry Collaborative Centre, Asunción, Paraguay is headed by our Senior Fellow, Prof. Dr. Julio Torales. The Centre is part of the Research Group on Mental Disorders Epidemiology, Psychopathology, and Neuroscience, hosted at the School of Medical Sciences, National of Asunción (UNA), which is a recognised consolidated research group by the National Council of Science and Technology of Paraguay (CONACYT). Its specific areas of interest are public mental health, epidemiology and psychopathology of mental disorders, psychodermatology, and physiotherapy in mental health, and geopsychiatry. The Collaborative Centre is committed to producing high-quality research and translating findings into clinical practice. It collaborates with local healthcare providers, universities, and international organisations, ensuring its research aligns with global mental health priorities while addressing the specific needs of Paraguay and the Latin American region.
